(PASADENA, Calif.) — The 2018 Cross Country competition for the Comanche started with Friday night’s Cool Breeze Invitational. The evening was fast for the Comanche and provided an opportunity for all of the team’s healthy runners to compete. Individually, 17 of the 25 boys set new personal bests and 12 of the 20 girls set personal bests.
The Comanche boys team competed without number 1 runner Logan Underwood and managed to finish sixth in the non-seeded varsity race. Changes in the course made the race faster for everyone. Still, the Comaches are excited since our combined 2018 top 7 runner’s finished 19 minutes faster than the year prior raising the expectations. This is a team that is young (only three seniors) so expecting big improvements is reasonable. The team finished 10th in the State in Division 2 last season. Notable performances: Michael Gutierrez (12) 15:25; Connor Albin (10) 15:43.
Coach Steve Frisone asked the Comanche girls if they wanted to compete in the non-seeded or seeded sweepstakes race. The Comanche girls proved they made the right choice competing in the seeded sweepstakes race—finishing 4th overall—and only finishing behind the number 1,2, and 3 teams in the state. This is another young group (one senior) of runners that entered the season expecting to be good, but may have shaken up the Cross Country world with the stellar performance. Notable performances: Emma Hadley (9) 17:12; Sarah Paino (10) 17:53; Ashling Carr (11) 17:56; Isabella Frisone (9) 18:03.
The Comanches next races will take place Saturday, September 15th, at the Woodbridge Invitational.
