Congratulations to Shayla Sweet and Jared Fernandez for earning the February Comanche Athlete of the Month! These two athletes have performed above and beyond expectations, and we would like to recognize their tremendous accomplishments! Here is a rundown of what these two athletes have achieved in February:
Shayla Sweet: Shayla is a senior captain at Canyon and has been playing varsity basketball for 3 years. She plays as a forward and had a total of 148 points for the season. She has been a trusted scorer in important games such as Villa Park and El Modena with 10 and 13 points in each game, respectively. Shayla’s favorite part about playing basketball is bonding with her teammates, whom are a second family to her and always make her laugh. Shayla’s leadership and team-oriented attitude has left a lasting impact of the basketball program. She is everything we look for in a stellar student-athlete at Canyon High School.
Jared Fernandez: Jared is a senior at Canyon and has had an outstanding last year as a wrestler. Jared finished 1st in the county without anyone scoring an offensive point on him. Jared’s final record was 48-10, he took first in league, first in CIF, and was recognized as the Most Valuable Upper Weight. Jared’s accolades never seem to end as he continued his successful run at the Masters competition. He took 9th in Masters and he was able to qualify for state. Jared ended his season by finishing 12th in the state after he beat the #11 ranked wrestler and lost in over time to the wrestler that took 4th in the State Tournament. Jared’s incredible work ethic and determination allowed him to win the “pursuing excellence with honor” award at the State Tournament. Jared has had an amazing 4 years at Canyon, and we are extremely grateful to have such an amazing athlete representing the Comanches!
Congratulations to these tremendous athletes!
